Vigo Exam

Vigo Exam

An online English testing system built to match real IELTS and VSTEP exam conditions — from the interface and the timing to the rules candidates work under.

Practice that does not match the real exam room measures nothing

A candidate gets used to one interface, then walks into the exam and meets another. How many marks are lost to fumbling with the controls rather than to a gap in ability — nobody knows. Vigo Exam was built to remove that gap: a mock sitting should match the real one down to the last click.

What Vigo Exam is

An online English testing system built to match real IELTS and VSTEP exam conditions — from the interface and the timing to the rules candidates work under.

It runs independently but works alongside the Vigo platform: Vigo handles the learning, Vigo Exam handles the measurement. Learners follow a path on Vigo, then have their level checked at set points through the year.

Three strengths

The Speaking section with its countdown clock

A true exam-room interface

The entire interface is in English, not bilingual, exactly as in a computer-delivered IELTS room. During the test there is no way out except to submit. A countdown clock, question flagging for review, and a navigation bar showing clearly which questions have been answered.

The list of assigned test sittings

A deep test library

IELTS, VSTEP and general English papers at a range of levels. The question bank is tagged by section, question type, difficulty and category — so new papers can be assembled from existing questions.

Results and progress analysis by skill

AI marking

Reading and Listening are marked automatically on submission. Writing is marked by AI, with a teacher able to review before results are released. Turnaround drops from days to minutes.

A new paper added in minutes

What matters more than the number of papers is how fast new ones can be added. The system is data-driven: paper content lives in a data structure kept entirely separate from the interface rather than hard-coded into the software. Because of that, loading a new paper takes minutes.

Adding papers needs no developer

Load the data and it is done — no code changes, no new release. The academic lead can do it directly, on the same day the paper arrives.

Exam rules are settings, not code

Duration, the word-count threshold for Writing, whether audio plays once or can be replayed — all set per paper type. Lock them down for IELTS and VSTEP mock sittings; allow replays for school progress checks.

Built this way, the paper library grows at the pace of teaching and learning rather than waiting on a software release cycle. When a real exam format changes, most of the adjustment is a configuration change too.

All four skills, under real exam rules

  • Reading — Two columns, with passage and questions scrolling independently and a draggable split. Six question types to the IELTS standard.
  • Listening — A speaker check before entering the room. No seeking, no speed change, no replay — or replays allowed, depending on the paper type.
  • Speaking — A recording check first, with handling for a blocked or faulty microphone.
  • Writing — Browser spellcheck and autocorrect are disabled, because leaving them on marks the paper for the candidate. Word counting against a threshold, continuous autosave, and suggested timing per task.

The system handles the situations a real computer room throws up: connection dropping mid-test, automatic submission at time-up, logging in on the wrong account, opening the test on a phone by mistake.

After the exam

Results do not stop at a total score. There is analysis by section and by question type, with an explanation of why the correct answer is correct and why a candidate may have chosen otherwise.

The whole paper can be reviewed, Listening comes with a transcript, and incorrect answers can be filtered out on their own. Attempt history shows progress across sittings.
